The Asilomar AI Principles, produced at the Future of Life Institute’s Beneficial AI 2017 conference and published on August 11, 2017, comprise exactly 23 numbered principles. They are organized into three groups: five on research issues, twelve on ethics and values, and six on longer-term issues. The conference and its principles took their name from the Asilomar grounds in California, deliberately echoing the 1975 Asilomar conference at which biologists set safety norms for recombinant DNA.
