Shannon credited J. W. Tukey for the word bit

In “A Mathematical Theory of Communication” (1948), Claude Shannon introduced the unit of information that results from using base two and wrote that such units “may be called binary digits, or more briefly bits, a word suggested by J. W. Tukey.” The term bit has been the basic unit of digital information ever since.
