The University of Reading’s June 2014 press release stated that the chatbot Eugene Goostman, which “simulates a 13 year old boy,” had been “mistaken for a human more than 30% of the time,” convincing 33% of 30 judges in five-minute keyboard conversations. The youthful, non-native-English persona gave judges a ready excuse for the program’s odd or incomplete answers.
