Grey Walter's 1940s robot tortoises found their own charging station

William Grey Walter’s tortoise robots, Elmer and Elsie, built around 1948-49, were “capable of phototaxis, by which they could find their way to a recharging station when they ran low on battery power.” In other words, a self-docking robot that returns to its charger - a behavior most people associate with the modern robot vacuum - was demonstrated with a pair of vacuum tubes more than seventy years earlier.
