Italy fined Replika's maker five million euros over data protection

In May 2025, Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, imposed a five million euro fine on Luka Inc., the US company behind the AI companion app Replika, over the data processing it carried out through the service. The same measure opened a further investigation into the generative-AI model behind Replika, following the authority’s February 2023 ban on processing Italian users’ data.
