John Deere’s See and Spray system uses boom-mounted cameras and machine learning to spray non-residual herbicide only on detected weeds rather than across an entire field. In a September 18, 2024 update covering the 2024 growing season, Deere said farmers using the technology across more than one million acres saved about 8 million gallons of herbicide mix, an average of 59 percent savings on corn, soybean and cotton fields. The cameras scan over 2,100 square feet of crop per second while the sprayer moves at up to 15 miles per hour, with onboard processors deciding crop-versus-weed for each plant and firing individual nozzles accordingly.
