Turnitin's AI detector reached 10,700 institutions at launch

When Turnitin turned on its AI writing detection feature on April 4, 2023, it did so all at once for its entire customer base. The company’s announcement states that the capability became available to “over 10,700 institutions and more than 2.1 million educators,” who could use it to flag text likely generated by tools such as ChatGPT without any extra setup. The scale of the rollout, only months after ChatGPT’s launch, illustrates how quickly AI-detection tooling was pushed into mainstream academic-integrity workflows - and how broadly its known false-positive risk was distributed.
