Duolingo launches Duolingo Max, a GPT-4 subscription tier

On March 14, 2023, the day after OpenAI released GPT-4, Duolingo announced Duolingo Max, a new subscription tier above its existing Super Duolingo plan that uses GPT-4 to power AI-driven learning features. The company said it had collaborated with OpenAI for months to adapt the model to language teaching, refine its prompts, and add safety guardrails before putting it in front of learners.

The tier launched with two features built on the model. Roleplay lets a learner practice a conversation in a realistic scenario - ordering coffee, shopping for furniture, discussing travel plans - and receive AI-generated feedback on the accuracy and complexity of their responses. Explain My Answer lets a learner tap to get a plain-language explanation of why a particular answer was right or wrong, the kind of follow-up a human tutor would give. The features first rolled out to English speakers learning Spanish and French, with more courses to follow, and the tier was offered as a higher-priced subscription on iOS.

Duolingo Max arrived the same week as Khanmigo and Microsoft 365 Copilot, part of a wave of established software products bolting GPT-4 onto existing workflows rather than building a chatbot from scratch.

Why business readers should care: Duolingo Max is a clean example of monetizing generative AI as a premium upsell on top of an existing freemium product, where the new model unlocked a feature - open-ended conversation practice - that the company’s older purpose-built models could not deliver.
