Lovable launches as AI full-stack app builder evolved from gpt-engineer

Lovable launched in December 2024 as the commercial evolution of the gpt-engineer open-source project, rebranded to distinguish the product from its CLI predecessor. Where gpt-engineer had been a developer tool for generating codebases via the command line, Lovable was a browser application targeting a broader audience: founders, designers, and domain experts who wanted to build and ship software without deep programming knowledge.

Lovable’s Agent Mode — the default since launch — autonomously researched the codebase context before making changes, searched the web for relevant APIs and documentation, self-debugged errors, and validated its own changes. The platform integrated directly with GitHub, Supabase for databases, and Stripe for payments, allowing full-stack applications with authentication, data persistence, and monetisation to be built through natural language alone.

Lovable 2.0, launched June 2026, added MCP server integration, sub-agent spawning, and GPT-5 access. The company reached $500 million ARR and a $6.6 billion valuation by May 2026, backed by $330 million in Series B funding. With 8 million users and 25 million projects created, Lovable demonstrated that natural-language app generation had found genuine product-market fit well beyond the traditional developer community.
