ByteDance launches Trae AI-first IDE with free frontier model access

ByteDance launched Trae in early 2025 as an AI-first code editor with an unusual competitive strategy: offering free unlimited access to frontier models including Claude 3.7 Sonnet, GPT-4o, and DeepSeek R1, at no cost to developers. This compared favourably with Cursor’s $20/month subscription and positioned Trae as a cost-effective alternative backed by ByteDance’s scale.

Trae shipped across three form factors: Trae IDE (a standalone editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux), Trae Plugin (for VS Code and JetBrains), and Trae Agent (a CLI for autonomous task execution). The SOLO mode, launched March 2026, emphasised a single-agent autonomous workflow. A distinctive Figma design-to-code mode converted UI designs directly to frontend code.

By offering frontier model access at no cost — absorbing the inference expense through ByteDance’s advertising-driven business model — Trae competed on price in a market where others charged subscription fees. The launch reflected ByteDance’s broader ambition in developer tools, applying the freemium model that had worked for TikTok in consumer apps to the developer tooling space.
