Claude for Government became generally available to U.S. federal and state agencies

Anthropic announced on 2026-09-30 that Claude for Government “is generally available for federal and state agencies,” after a public beta that began in July. The platform delivers Claude’s coding and agentic work capabilities “through a FedRAMP High authorized environment,” and Anthropic says agencies get capabilities comparable to commercial customers, with new features generally arriving on the commercial release cadence. Agency staff use Claude on the desktop with skills, plugins and projects for work such as memo creation, RFP reviews and casework, and Claude Code for building and modernizing software. The Claude Code command-line interface and Claude for Microsoft 365 are rolling out in early access in the same environment.

The commercial model is built around public-sector budgeting: “No seat fees.” Agencies buy usage in fixed increments with a hard not-to-exceed cap, so spending cannot pass what has been obligated. Department-level administrators allocate prepaid usage to sub-agencies, and SCIM group mappings set rate limits, dollar caps and allowed models per seat tier. Agencies do not need a separate cloud-provider relationship and can contract with Anthropic directly on general-availability terms.

For oversight, administrative actions go to a reviewable audit log, sensitive operations on Anthropic’s side require two-person approval, usage exports contain metering data only, and conversation history stays local on the agency-managed device. A FedRAMP Secure Configuration Guide is published through Anthropic’s trust center, and the application deploys through standard agency device-management tools.

Why it matters: it is a direct, cloud-intermediary-free route for a frontier lab’s agentic tools into U.S. agencies at the highest FedRAMP baseline, with pricing designed around appropriations rules rather than per-seat licences. What it does not show: the announcement names no agency customers or usage figures, and general availability of the platform does not settle separate disputes over Anthropic’s status with particular departments.
