Fervo Energy signs 396 MW geothermal power deal with Google for Utah data center

Fervo Energy announced on September 1, 2026, filed as an exhibit to its own SEC report, that it signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with Google, the largest enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) PPA to date. The power is drawn from Fervo’s Cape Station GeoCluster in Beaver County, Utah, and is described as a “foundational building block” for a planned Google data center in the state. Fervo says the contracted capacity is expected online in 2028.

The deal carries an expansion option: Google can grow its offtake by roughly 600 additional megawatts, for a total of nearly 1 gigawatt, by June 2030. Cape Station itself is permitted to reach as much as 2 gigawatts, so the Google contract covers under a fifth of the site’s eventual permitted capacity even at the expanded figure. Fervo has committed more than $2 billion to developing the geocluster, and the initial 100-megawatt phase of Cape Station is already the largest enhanced geothermal deployment in operation.

No dollar figure for the PPA itself was disclosed. What the filing does establish is technical: enhanced geothermal, which fractures hot dry rock to circulate fluid rather than relying on naturally occurring hydrothermal reservoirs, is now being contracted at data-center scale by a hyperscaler rather than treated as a pilot technology.

For a leader thinking about AI infrastructure risk, this is a signal that hyperscalers are diversifying power procurement beyond gas, nuclear restarts, and standard renewables PPAs because grid interconnection queues for those sources are backed up years out. It does not prove EGS can scale to gigawatt levels on Fervo’s timeline; the contracted power does not arrive until 2028, two years after the deal was signed, and the 1 GW figure is an option, not a commitment.
