OpenAI Commits Funding and Frontier Model Access to the DOE Genesis Mission

On July 22, 2026, OpenAI announced a package of commitments supporting the US Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, the federal initiative that brings together DOE, its 17 National Laboratories, universities, and industry with the goal of doubling the productivity and impact of American research within a decade. OpenAI framed the move as turning frontier AI “from tool to national strategic scientific infrastructure.”

The concrete commitments: $4 million in Codex access for approximately 2,000 Genesis researchers at National Laboratories and universities; $3 million in API support for two large-scale scientific campaigns; up to $10 million in API usage for participating researchers for $2.5 million spent; access to GPT-Rosalind’s specialized bioscience capabilities for selected national-laboratory biology projects; early access to selected models for trusted lab leaders; and expanded trusted access to advanced cyber capabilities for national-laboratory cybersecurity researchers doing defensive work.

The announcement also documents deployments already underway: an AI Jam Session in which more than 1,000 scientists across nine National Laboratories tested frontier models on domain-specific problems, and advanced reasoning models running on Venado, the supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as a shared resource across the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories. The two initial Genesis campaigns are ambitious by design: pursuing high-temperature superconductors that work at practical pressures, and an “Atlas of the Machine-Accessible Frontier” examining where AI can and cannot yet advance science.

For leaders tracking AI in R&D, this is a marker of how frontier labs are institutionalizing science work - not one-off collaborations but structured access tiers, subsidized compute, and named moonshot campaigns embedded in a federal program. It also formalizes the pairing of frontier models with national supercomputing and experimental facilities rather than treating AI as a standalone product.
