SAP Completes Prior Labs Acquisition, Commits Over 1 Billion Euros to Tabular AI

On July 17, 2026, SAP announced it had completed its acquisition of Prior Labs, the German startup behind the TabPFN family of tabular foundation models. Alongside the close, SAP committed to invest more than 1 billion euros over the next four years to scale Prior Labs into a leading frontier AI lab focused on structured data - the tables, transactions, and records that underpin most business operations.

Prior Labs will continue to operate as an independent entity within SAP. The move builds on SAP’s own work in tabular foundation models, which began with SAP-RPT-1, and brings one of the field’s leading research teams in-house. Tabular foundation models are a distinct category from large language models: rather than predicting text, they are pre-trained to make predictions directly on structured datasets, an area where classical tree-based methods long dominated deep learning approaches.

The deal is a bet that the next competitive frontier in enterprise AI is not chat but prediction over business data - forecasting, classification, and anomaly detection performed natively on the tables that ERP systems already hold. For SAP, which sits on some of the world’s most valuable structured business data, owning the leading tabular AI research group is a natural strategic complement.

The acquisition also stands out as a European story: a European enterprise software giant acquiring a European AI research startup and funding it at frontier-lab scale, at a time when most frontier AI investment flows to US labs.
