AI21 Labs is an AI company founded in 2017 by Yoav Shoham, Ori Goshen, and Amnon Shashua. Shoham is a professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford, and Shashua is the founder of Mobileye, the autonomous-driving vision company; the combination gave AI21 unusually deep academic and entrepreneurial roots from the start. The company describes its mission as building “trustworthy artificial intelligence that powers humanity towards superproductivity” and positions itself around enterprise AI systems and foundation models.
AI21’s first major release was the Jurassic-1 family in August 2021, announced through its AI21 Studio platform. Jurassic-1 Jumbo had 178 billion parameters - slightly larger than GPT-3 - and the models used an unusually large 250,000-token vocabulary that, per AI21, was the first to include multi-word tokens for common expressions, phrases, and named entities. The company later shifted to the Jamba line, whose hybrid Transformer-Mamba architecture targets long-context, high-throughput enterprise workloads.
Why business readers should care: AI21 was an early independent challenger to OpenAI at GPT-3 scale and has since carved out a niche in efficient, long-context enterprise models, making it one of the more technically distinctive of the non-US frontier labs.
