Black Forest Labs

Black Forest Labs is a generative-AI research company that publicly launched on August 1, 2024. Its founding team includes researchers and engineers who created several of the foundational models in modern image generation, including VQGAN, Latent Diffusion, and the Stable Diffusion models - the same lineage that powered the open text-to-image boom of 2022. Several of its founders had previously worked at Stability AI, and the lab’s debut was widely read as that core team striking out on its own.

The company announced itself with the FLUX.1 family of text-to-image models and a Series Seed round of $31 million led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from General Catalyst and others. FLUX.1 scaled a hybrid transformer-and-diffusion architecture to 12 billion parameters and was released in three tiers: a closed, API-only [pro] model, an open-weight [dev] model for non-commercial use, and a fast [schnell] model under the permissive Apache 2.0 license.

Why business readers should care: Black Forest Labs concentrated much of the original Stable Diffusion talent into one focused image-and-video lab, and its tiered open and closed releases became a reference point for how generative-media startups balance openness against commercialization.
