Crusoe

Crusoe is an American energy and infrastructure company that became the developer behind the flagship data center campus of the Stargate Project in Abilene, Texas. Crusoe started by capturing flared natural gas at oil wells to power mobile computing, then pivoted toward building large AI data centers, positioning itself as a vertically integrated builder spanning power and compute infrastructure.

The Abilene campus is its signature project. Built at the Lancium Clean Campus, it was announced in March 2025 to expand to eight buildings totaling roughly 4 million square feet and 1.2 gigawatts of power, with each building designed to hold up to 50,000 NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 units. The first phase went live on September 30, 2025, running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and the campus won the Data Center Dynamics 2025 award for North American Data Center Project of the Year.

Crusoe’s role illustrates a structural feature of the AI buildout: the largest training campuses are increasingly built not by the model labs or even the cloud providers alone, but by specialist developers who assemble land, power, and construction at gigawatt scale on behalf of operators like OpenAI and Oracle. By 2025 Crusoe described more than 1.6 gigawatts under operation and construction, with a development pipeline exceeding 10 gigawatts.
