Isomorphic Labs

Isomorphic Labs is an Alphabet company announced on November 1, 2021, spun out of DeepMind as a commercial venture. It was founded by Demis Hassabis, who served as its CEO while also remaining CEO of DeepMind. Its stated mission is to “reimagine the entire drug discovery process from first principles with an AI-first approach.”

The company grew directly out of AlphaFold, DeepMind’s protein-structure-prediction system. Hassabis framed AlphaFold2 as “an important first proof point” that AI methods could solve major biological challenges, and argued that “biology can be thought of as an information processing system” - the source of the name “Isomorphic,” suggesting deep correspondences between biology and information science. Rather than just analyzing data, Isomorphic aims to build predictive and generative models of biological phenomena to find drug targets and design molecules.

Why business readers should care: Isomorphic Labs is one of the clearest tests of whether breakthroughs in AI for science translate into commercial value, pairing a frontier AI lab’s methods with pharmaceutical partnerships in one of the highest-stakes, most expensive industries.
