Palantir Technologies

Palantir Technologies is a US software company known for data-integration and analytics platforms used by both commercial and government customers. Its products are built to pull together large, scattered data sources and make them usable for analysts and decision-makers, and the company has long had a substantial defense and intelligence business. In the generative-AI era, Palantir’s central new product is its Artificial Intelligence Platform, or AIP.

In its own documentation, Palantir describes AIP as a platform that “connects AI with your data and operations” and is designed to “drive automation across operational processes.” AIP lets organizations use large language models from multiple providers on top of Palantir’s underlying data model, building “production-ready AI-powered workflows, agents, and functions” while keeping security, audit, and governance controls in place. For defense customers, Palantir markets a version that runs these models on private and classified networks, allowing military organizations to apply commercial and self-hosted models to sensitive missions.

Palantir is also the company behind the Maven Smart System, the software product that grew out of the US military’s Project Maven artificial-intelligence effort. Maven Smart System fuses data from intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance sources, such as satellite and sensor feeds, to help identify potential targets and support battlefield decisions. It has become one of the most prominent operational deployments of AI inside the US military, expanding across multiple combatant commands.

For a general reader, Palantir is a leading example of how AI is entering serious government and military work not as a science-fiction weapon but as software that organizes information and supports human decisions. Its prominence in defense, and its role in target-identification tools, places it directly in the debates over how much weight humans should give to machine-generated analysis in life-and-death decisions.
