QCRI - Qatar Computing Research Institute

The Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) is a national research institute in Doha, established in 2010 by the Qatar Foundation and now operating as one of the research institutes of Hamad Bin Khalifa University. It conducts applied computing research aimed at the needs of Qatar, the wider Arab region, and the world.

QCRI is particularly known for its work on Arabic-language technologies - natural-language processing, machine translation, and speech for a language that is under-represented in mainstream AI systems - as well as data analytics, cybersecurity, and computational social science. Its research is aligned with Qatar’s National Research Strategy and Vision 2030, and it has launched a dedicated Qatar Center for Artificial Intelligence.

Why a business reader should care: QCRI is part of a broader pattern of smaller states building research capacity around languages and problems the big US and Chinese labs neglect, and its Arabic-language work shows how regional institutions fill gaps that global models leave open.
