xAI

xAI is the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk in 2023. Its about page states a mission to understand the universe, and the company is the maker of the Grok family of AI assistant models.

xAI develops and distributes Grok through its own apps and API and via integration with the X platform. The company is associated with large-scale compute investment and a fast model-release cadence, with the Grok 4 generation current on its site at the verification date.

In February 2026, xAI was acquired by SpaceX in an all-stock deal; both companies were controlled by Elon Musk, so the transaction combined two of his ventures (see 2026-spacex-acquires-xai). SpaceX framed the combination around building space-based data centers and described the merged company as spanning space, connectivity, and AI. As of June 2026, Grok therefore sits inside SpaceX rather than as a standalone company.

Why business readers should care: xAI is a well-funded frontier-AI effort tied to a major social platform, a high-profile founder, and now a rocket and satellite company, so its trajectory affects competitive dynamics even for organizations that do not yet use Grok directly.
