Aidan Gomez is a computer scientist who was one of the eight authors of “Attention Is All You Need,” the 2017 paper that introduced the Transformer architecture. He worked on the paper as a young researcher associated with Google Brain, making him among the youngest contributors to one of the most consequential papers in modern AI.
In 2019 Gomez co-founded Cohere, an enterprise-focused AI company based in Toronto, with Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang, and serves as its CEO. Cohere builds large language models and retrieval tools aimed at businesses, and Gomez’s role places one of the Transformer paper’s own authors at the head of a company built directly on that architecture. He has also been involved in for.ai, a research collective, and has been an active voice on the practical deployment of language models.
Why business readers should care: Gomez illustrates how the small group of researchers behind a single 2017 paper went on to found and lead major AI companies. As Cohere’s CEO he is a direct link between the foundational research and the enterprise products now built on it.
