Alexandr Wang

Alexandr Wang is the founder of Scale AI and, since June 2025, Meta’s first Chief AI Officer, where his official Meta leadership page says he leads Meta Superintelligence Labs. He founded Scale AI in 2016 while a 19-year-old student at MIT, building a company focused on the data and infrastructure needed for large-scale AI projects.

Scale AI became one of the most important behind-the-scenes companies in modern AI by supplying the labeled and curated data that many leading models are trained and evaluated on. Under Wang the company grew to a roughly 29 billion dollar valuation and supported model development across much of the industry. In 2021 he was reported to be the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. In 2025 Meta took a large stake in Scale AI and Wang moved to Meta to lead its superintelligence effort, while Scale continued to operate.

Wang sits at a part of the AI ecosystem that the public rarely sees: the human-powered data pipelines that make machine learning work. For a general reader, he is a reminder that frontier AI depends not only on algorithms and chips but on enormous, carefully managed datasets, and that the people who control that data supply have become major players in the field.
