Lotfi Aliasker Zadeh (1921-2017) was a professor in the Computer Science Division at the University of California, Berkeley, where he spent most of his career and directed the Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing. He chaired Berkeley’s electrical engineering department in the 1960s and championed its transformation into the modern Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). Zadeh is best known for founding fuzzy set theory, introduced in a 1965 paper, and the broader family of ideas that grew from it: fuzzy logic, fuzzy algorithms, fuzzy control, and what he later called “computing with words.” Where classical logic forces every statement to be strictly true or false, fuzzy logic lets membership in a category be a matter of degree, so a temperature can be partly “warm” and partly “hot.” This gave engineers a rigorous way to encode the imprecise, linguistic distinctions that humans use naturally.
Fuzzy logic moved out of theory and into widely shipped products, especially control systems for appliances, cameras, transit, and industrial equipment, where it offered smooth, intuitive behavior without exhaustive precise modeling. Zadeh received the IEEE Medal of Honor and the ACM Allen Newell Award, among many other honors. For a general reader, his work is a reminder that not every useful form of machine reasoning has to be black-and-white; capturing shades of meaning can be both practical and mathematically sound.
